Ali is an assistant professor of visual arts theory and photographic studies in the departments of Art History and Media Studies at Leiden University. He is the author of Place: Towards a Geophilosophy of Photography and co-editor of Animation and Memory. His next book is called: Psychosomatic Images: Photographic Reflections of Mental Disorders.
